India to assist sugar, rice sectors
India is to join Cuba in providing assistance to the troubled Guyana Sugar Corporation.
The disclosure was made when Indian High Commissioner (HC) to Guyana, Venkatachalam Mahalingam, yesterday paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister (PM), Moses Nagamootoo.

Also present at the meeting yesterday was Minister of Agriculture, Noel Holder.
The PM explained that the meeting was a “very fruitful exchange of views”, and focused on some of the existing arrangements between the Indian and Guyanese Governments, a Government release said.
Nagamootoo said that talks focused on “a variety and wide field of assistance that could be rendered, technically and otherwise, to the sugar industry in Guyana.”
Mahalingam noted that during the “friendly” meeting, most of the discussions centered on what assistance India could offer Guyana in terms of agriculture, specifically in the rice and sugar industries.
He said he was looking forward to working together with the PM and the Minister of Agriculture in “furthering relations between India and Guyana, particularly in the field of agriculture.”
While rice has been doing well, except for lingering low prices to farmers, Guyana has been struggling with its sugar industry for a number of years now.
Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) has been facing a tight cash situation with poor production and falling world prices.
Earlier this week, Cuba in meetings with the PM also promised to help Guyana to revive the sugar industry.
