Woodpecker Products Junior National Squash Tournament …
The Woodpecker Products Junior National Tournament, hosted by the Guyana Squash Association in collaboration with its leading sponsor Digicel, began with inspiring performances from several in-form players on Wednesday evening, at the
Georgetown Club.
Shomari Wiltshire showed impressive ball control and court awareness as he easily dispatched of Dominic Collins with several dismissive forearm drives and smart employ of back hand short arm volleys.
The Under-13 right hander looked a class above his opponent and is rapidly improving, ahead of the upcoming Junior Caribbean Amateur Squash Association (CASA) Tournament. Several other players won without conceding a set including Jason Gomes, Kamir Khan, Chad DeAbreu and Lucas Jonas.
Nathan Rahaman held on despite a late surge from Mashel Allicock to win a marathon third game 18/16, to seal a 3-0 win. Of the females around winner’s row after the first night of events, Aliyah Persaud played a hard fought game to beat Abosaide Cadogan 3-1, while Makeda Harding dominated Kirsten Gomes 3-0 in an 11/1, 11/2, 11/3 victory.
In the night’s closest game, John Phang recovered from two sets down to edge Gianni Carpenter 3-2 ( 6/11, 8/11, 11/2, 11/9, 11/7). The tournament was set to continue last evening, at the same venue.
