There was once a war on bad manners. It was not successful. The war ended, and the bad manners raised the flag of victory.
Some people simply do not understand what manners are about. There are some persons no matter how many times you try to be courteous their faces always have a sour look. There are some persons who no matter how often you wish them a pleasant day, simply do not reply. Some of them are powerful and their attitude reflects their contempt of others.
It may not always be a case of wanting to not be nice. They may never have grown up in an environment where they saw persons being friendly, kind, considerate or mannerly. All they may have experienced is abuse and rudeness. This is why they do not bother to show basic courtesies.
This country is running a deficit when it comes to bad manners. There are far too many persons who simply do not practice good manners.
Good manners are not just a sign of refinement. They are the gateway to happiness. By simply smiling at someone, saying a friendly word or being mannerly, allows you to increase your satisfaction in life many times over.
The high level of discourtesy in our country is one of the main reasons why there is so much disrespect. We like to point our fingers at the politicians and suggest how uncouth some of them are, but the vast majority of citizens are no better. If we cannot respect ourselves and others, how can we expect the politicians to respect us? Charity has to begin at home. We should not expect others to be decent when we are indecent.
We have a lot of ignorant people out there who simply do not understand basic courtesies such as holding a door or a chair for someone. We have a great many men who do not get up to give their seat to a woman in a doctor’s waiting room. We have persons who do not say “Good Morning” when they see either a stranger or a friend. They do not greet each other with a friendly smile or comment. Nor do they understand human empathy.
Guyana does not need another war on bad manners. It does not need another dose of condemning those who urinate on the side of the roads, dispose their litter indiscriminately or are ill-mannered in their speech. What Guyana needs is to promote desirable qualities. Condemnation has not worked. It is time for promotion; promotion of that which is mannerly in society.
People have to be taught what basic courtesy is all about. Many of them do not know. Some of them do not even know that they should make their bed when they arise in the mornings. Many of them walk through their doors and do not greet anyone.
A campaign of education is needed to begin to restore some standards. It is nice to clean-up our city, but it would be much better if we can clean-up our manners or rather the lack of it. It would make for a better country.
