A man who was allegedly nabbed by police following a lively chase in Canje, Berbice, has been remanded to jail
on a charge of Robbery with violence.
Alex Beepat, 19, of Sheet Anchor, East Canje, Berbice and Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, yesterday appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs Marcus at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on the aforementioned charge.
Prosecuting Sergeant Phillip Sheriff told the court that Beepat on Sunday last, at Fort Ordnance Housing Scheme, East Canje, Berbice, while being in company of others, robbed Somattie Sayarange of $300,000. During the time of the robbery he used personal violence against her.
Beepat was refused bail and remanded to jail until June 22.
The police had responded in a timely manner after being informed about the robbery which occurred around 13:30 hrs and while scouring the area the cops spotted some men fitting the description of the bandits. As the police made advances towards the suspects the men made a run for it with the lawmen in hot pursuit.
Beepat was reportedly captured in the vicinity of the Canje Bridge while his two colleagues managed to escape.
