A Brazilian miner was remanded on an attempted murder charge, when he made an appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Ivor Nascimento De Costa was not required to plead to the charge which stated that on May 27, at Black Water Backdam, with intent to murder, he wounded Rondel Wellington.
The charge was read to De Costa by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Prosecutor, Police Corporal Bharrat Mangru, who objected to bail, argued that the defendant is a flight risk because he has no ties to Guyana. The request was upheld and the accused was remanded to prison until June 12.
The matter was transferred to the Kamarang Magistrate’s Courts.
Meanwhile, a Mon Repos maid accused of stealing millions in cash and jewellery from her employer was released on $100,000 bail by Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry.
Yvette Sookraj, 40, of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara denied the allegation which stated between May 13 and May 25, she stole $2.9M in Guyana currency, a large quantity of US dollars, two gold chains and one gold ring, all totaling $5M – the property of Basil Dial.
Police Corporal Shawn Gonsalves told the court that on May 13, at around 20:00 hrs, Dial secured his valuables and left his premises. When he returned he made checks for the items and noticed that they were missing.
The matter was reported and an investigation was launched. Sookraj, who worked with Dial for over eight years, was summoned by the police to visit the station. While there, checks were made on her person and $100,000 fell out of her purse. But the jewellery was not recovered.
Since the prosecution had no objections to bail, the mother of two was ordered to lodge her passport and report to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) every Friday.
The matter will be called again on June 19.
