Even as the efforts to restore Georgetown, the Garden City, to its original state, progresses, cleanup campaigns continues around the city. Businesses and members of the public have been climbing on board the cleanup
train for the past two weeks.
Courts Guyana has now joined the cleanup bandwagon by cleaning up the Main Street Avenue, just outside the Main Street Georgetown branch.
Public Relations Officer (PRO), Roberta Ferguson, said that Courts’ participation in the cleanup campaign has been in the making for some time, but was delayed by bad weather. She said that after realizing that the rain may not hold its arm for anytime soon, the staff decided that the cleanup must go on regardless of the weather.
According to Ferguson the cleanup exercise will extend to the nearby Tiger Bay neighbourhood and other areas in the vicinity.
Ferguson also revealed that the Main Street Avenue which was adopted by Courts some years ago will be given a facelift other than just being cleaned up. Seats will be refurbished; tree trunks will be painted and there will be trimming of plants. Two bins will be added by the company to the pavement.
The cleanup will not be limited to a season. The PRO said that since the Avenue is the Company’s adopted child, there will be maintenance work done every year.
Yesterday when the Kaieteur News reporter visited Main Street, the team was weeding, removing moss from trees and placing waste into garbage bags. There was a sense of pride, as the staff set about being a part of restoring the city.
Meanwhile, following the grand inauguration of the President of Guyana, David A Granger, two days ago (Independence Day) at the Providence National Stadium, massive littering was observed after patrons would have left the venue.
However, by noon, the majority of the trash was gone.
