Toshao of Kwebana Village, Region One, Godfrey Wilson, has expressed willingness in working along with the newly appointed government.
In a recent interview, Wilson said that he is going to allow the new government “time to settle in”. He explained that his village is faced with many problems, but they are hoping that the roads and land reservation projects would be undertaken soon.
“We are waiting on the new government to see how they are going to approach the road issue, the roads are very bad”, he said, while adding, “I know it is going to take some time to get these projects running”.
He went on to say that the village was promised a $5M grant from the Community Development Plans (CDP) to start a cassava project. However, they are still awaiting the funds.
Wilson revealed that his village had applied for a land reservation extension some nine years ago, but they are yet to receive approval. He explained that Chinese logging company Bai ShanLin was contracted to have the same reserve the village had applied for. But Wilson is hopeful that the reserve will be granted to the community since they “really need it”.
As it relates to other problems, the Toshao pointed out that although the entire community does not have ready access to light and water, they are satisfied with the little they have now.
Wilson has affirmed that even though the community is still divided, he is eager to work along with the Government through the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples Affairs for the betterment of the village.
A few weeks ago he had condemned what seemed to be acts of discrimination displayed by the then Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, against non-supporters of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), after several solar panels and a tractor were handed over to a committee that consists of mostly PPP/C supporters.
The Toshao said that the Village Council which comprises himself and other councilors, is tasked with the responsibility of handling the affairs of the village, and as such, the equipment should have been given to the council. According to Wilson, although the tractor was given to the committee, it will not be able to function, since it can only be operated in a programme designed by his council.
At present, the equipment is still in the possession of the committee, since Regional Chairman, Paul Pierre, has not amended the problem.
He had also condemned what he described as “disrespectful and insulting remarks” made by the Regional Chairman and the Community Development Officer (CDO) Zola Rodrigues.
The comments were made at a public meeting held by officials of the then Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, at the village’s playground about two weeks ago.
He stressed that at the meeting the Regional Chairman and CDO accused him, as well as other village Toshaos and Councillors of not carrying out their functions. However, Wilson said that the remarks are not true.
Wilson opined that he and his councilors are being victimized by the Chairman and CDO.
