Royston Bacchus of RG Mining Company yesterday donated S1M for the restoration of the Independence Arch. The contribution was made to the Coordinator of the Project, Lt. Col. Lawrence London.
Mr. Bacchus has committed to making further contributions and hopes that others will join in the effort.
Accompanying Mr. Bacchus was the Facilitator, Mr. Eugene Gilbert.
“Mr. Bacchus saw it as his patriotic duty to join in the grand effort to bring back Guyana to its former glory.”
The National Independence Monument, located on Brickdam near Vlissengen Road, bears significance to Guyana gaining independence from Britain on May 26, 1966. It was a gift to the people of Guyana from the Demerara Bauxite Company (DEMBA).
The structure, in the form of an arch, consists of three aluminum tubes made from Guyana’s bauxite mounted on a quartz base. Canadian engineer, Edric Klak, was the designer of the national monument.
For the past week citizens and companies have spared no effort in beautifying the capital city in time for May 26’s Independence celebrations.
The move to restore the Independence Arch and its environs was considered the first order of business for newly elected President David Granger, following his swearing-in ceremony.
The initiative was part of the “Cleanup Georgetown” campaign, spearheaded by the President in conjunction with the Municipality of Georgetown, the Government and private investors. Among the private investors, volunteering to the project were BK International and Cumming’s Electrical Company.
