DEAR EDITOR,
I refer to Mr Frederick Kissoon’s column entitled “Venality and Vendetta: Educating a Nation” which was published in the May 22nd edition of your newspaper.
In paragraph nine (9) of that column the following is stated: ‘Two such Foreign Ministry officials took the Jagan Government to court and won-Keith Michael Austin and Dr Cedric Grant.’
The statement is not accurate. Keith Michael Austin, who is my youngest brother, was never a member of the Foreign Service. I was. And it is true that I sued the Jagan Government and won. But it took eleven long years to get justice. In the meantime one had to exist in a poisonous environment, based on fear, constant intimidation, threats and vindictiveness. All of this inevitably led to the destruction of the Foreign Ministry. This is now unarguable.
My good friend and trusted colleague, Mr Carl Greenidge, is now the Foreign Minister. He is a highly intelligent man of broad culture and therefore well qualified to restore the professionalism and effectiveness of the Foreign Ministry. Mr Greenidge will have solid and wide support in so doing.
With every good wish
R M Austin
