– Ravens, Pacesetters on collision course
By Edison Jefford
After a crushing defeat against Ravens Friday night, Colts rebounded against home side Plaisance Guardians for a narrow win Sunday night when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) ‘King of the
Hard Court’ competition continued in Plaisance.
Colts prevailed 76-69 against Guardians in the Division I category of the competition with Shane Webster and guard, Rayon Cummings combining for 16 points apiece. Seasoned guards, Shelroy Thomas and Dave Causway supported with 13 and 12 points respectively. Dexter Walcott scored 10 points to highlight the good offensive showing for Colts.
Plaisance Guardians’ main offensive threat, Nikkoloi Smith continued his leading performance in the tournament with 20 points. Forward, Mark Richards added 14 points while Ron Campbell had 12 points and Kwame Fox 10 points.
The Georgetown-based Colts took early control of the game, outscoring the home side 23-16 in the first quarter. Colts maintained their advantage going into the halftime break, despite an even battle in the second quarter. Colts scored one more than Guardians’ 20 points to ensure that they lead 44-36 midway through the game.
Guardians’ meltdown in the third quarter almost gift-wrapped the win for Colts. However, after a poor penultimate period, it was clear Guardians left too much work to be done in the final period, which they won, but not enough to stop Colts from trampling them.
Melanie Patriots defeated Central Georgetown unit Pepsi Sonics via walkover Sunday night. The loss for Colts was their second in as many nights. Ravens steamrolled them 87-54 Saturday night at the same venue, which sparked Plaisance’s slide.
Guard, Ryan Stephney scored a game high 19 points while Jermaine Slater and Ryan Gullen had 14 points apiece. Marlon Rodrigues added 12 points in the comprehensive win for Ravens, which is on a collision course with TGH Pacesetters, which is also unbeaten.
For Plaisance, Campbell scored 14 while Enoc Matthews had 11 points. Richards and Smith had 10 points each in the heavy defeat.
In the second game Saturday night, Trinity Grid Holdings (TGH) Pacesetters beat Republic Bank Nets 67-50 with Stephon Gillis scoring 14 points, while Randy Richardson and Joslyn Crawford added 11 and 10 points in that order.
Fabian Johnson and Dorian Lewis had 12 points each, while Pelham Doris supported with seven points for Nets. In an opening game Saturday night, Colts edged Plaisance Guardians 53-48 in an Under-23 fixture.
Kevin Dey and Amoniki John led the winners with 13 and 12 points respectively. Nduka Horatio scored 21 points in the loss was while Kelvin Yorrick had 10 points. The competition shifts back to the Central Georgetown venue, Burnham Basketball Court tomorrow night.
