Dear Editor,
The President of Guyana has wide-ranging executive powers that make him or her immune from prosecution for his acts while in office. However, last week’s news that former President Donald Ramotar, in one of his last acts in office, freed child killer, Ravindra Deo, who was serving life, is appalling to say the least.
This killing had shocked the nation to the core and left two law-abiding citizens without a child. God knows their pain.
What thoughts were in the head of the former President when he decided to free this man? Were there others in jail who could have been freed? Is the President related to Mr Deo?
The police had done their work in investigating the crime which occurred 21 years ago and which left eight-year-old Vishnu Bhim dead after he was abducted from his Annandale, East Coast Demerara home.
The kidnappers demanded $1M in ransom. Indeed, Mr Deo had been the man that led police to the LBI backdam where the little boy’s bound and battered body was found.
He was sentenced to death but had the sentence commuted to life. I am ashamed to have been supporting Mr Ramotar.
The PPP has gone to Lusignan to pray for the massacre victims saying how they are sorry. What kind of message is the freeing of Ravindra Deo sending to Guyanese who wants justice for crimes and now see this?
Would it be too hard to ask the new President, David Granger, to look into this illogical, and highly immoral act by Mr Ramotar. This is indeed a shocking decision by the former President and one that should be condemned by all.
