A few days after being sworn in, Minister of Tourism Cathy Hughes has projected plans to improve Guyana’s tourism sector through a vigorous marketing strategy.
This strategy, according to Hughes, will encompass all available media outlets, including social media, in order to get the word out to potential markets about what ‘Guyana, South America undiscovered’ is all about.
Hughes, who is a past President of the Tourism Association of Guyana (THAG), spoke of the ministry’s projected main target demography as being the Guyanese in the Diaspora and international markets.
She also spoke of persons with disposable incomes as being another area that the Tourism Ministry will be looking to tap into.
Developing a partnership, Hughes said, between Guyana’s private sector and the Ministry of Tourism is also important towards the marketing process.
Regarding the transitioning process, Hughes is already well into her stride with regard to consultation with the senior staff in her ministry.
She also revealed that former Minister of Tourism, Irfaan Ali had contacted her and offered a hand in the transitioning process.
“At the end of the day, it is important that more pockets of people know about Guyana and what it has to offer.”
Since the new administration assumed office, the Government has embarked on a city wide cleanup campaign, in an effort to return Georgetown to its ‘garden city’ status.
Based upon figures from the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), Guyana’s quarterly performances with regard to arrivals for 2015 are ahead of last year’s first quarter figures. Data show that the period of January-March 2014 had 40,713 arrivals, versus the 46,369 for the same period this year.
In addition, there has been a steady increase in arrivals throughout the preceding years, with the United States being the largest source market with tourism market shares standing at 39.3%, followed by the Caribbean with a 24.4% slice of Guyana’s tourism market.
States such as New York and Illinois are in the lead in terms of visitor arrivals.
