The unauthorized movement of properties from the compounds of a number of Regional Administration offices across Guyana, has forced a Government Minister to intervene.
Yesterday, Minister of Communities, Ronald Bulkan, instructed his Permanent Secretary, Collin Croal, to ensure that Government assets are protected.
That Ministry was formerly known as the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, but has been renamed under the David Granger administration.
According to sources in the Ministry, Bulkan received several reports of items, including furniture, being removed from offices and other properties of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) offices across the different regions.
After confirming that several suspicious incidents had indeed occurred, Minister Bulkan reportedly “instructed” Croal to ensure that nothing was removed.
Croal as the Permanent Secretary, is the chief custodian of assets belonging to the central government and held by the RDCs in the 10 regions.
The Minister declined to comment. He would only say that he was addressing a number of issues; a Ministry official said that the Permanent Secretary was asked to write the 10 Regional Executive Officers to warn them of the repercussions of the unauthorized removal of assets and materials.
There have been accusations, some of which are being investigated, of assets being removed from Government ministries in the days following the May 11, elections, in which the People’s Progressive Party/Civic lost after a 23-year rule.
