The May-October session of the Criminal Assizes of the Suddie High Court in Essequibo, will hear almost 20 criminal matters over that period.
The opening ceremony held on the lawns of the Richard Fikhal College, at Suddie, saw the traditional march past by ranks of “G” Division. Commander of the Division, Kevin Adonis, gave the salute to Justice James Bovell-Drakes, who would be the sitting Judge.
There are seven rape cases, four murders, two sexual activities with a family member and two attempted murder cases.
Currently a rape matter involving a 16-year-old girl and an older man has commenced in the High Court.
The case is scheduled to continue in the following week.
