DEAR EDITOR,
I do not believe that Dominic Gaskin needs anyone to defend his appointment as Minister in President Granger’s cabinet. He is competent to do that for himself. But it aches me to read of the high hypocrisy of the PPP in their condemnation of his appointment. But, as we all know, that is the real PPP- nothing of substance comes out of them.
As the good book reminds us, we should take the beam out of our eye first, then, when we begin to see better, we should then take the mote out of our brother’s eye.
Dominic Gaskin is not only qualified for the position, but he is also competent. This appointment is the recommendation of the AFC, where Dominic has been our competent Treasurer for a number of years.
The mettle that Dominic displays is commendable. In 2011, after David Granger became the candidate for APNU, we had many discussions with Dominic here in New York. He was very frank with us in our deliberations. He laughed when he told us that his wife will have to make the hard decision of whether to support her Dad, who would be President if APNU won, or her husband, who would be a Minister if AFC won.
Dominic was, and is, a man of principle. He stuck with the AFC and campaigned against his father-in-law in 2011. His appointment as Minister is the recommendation of the AFC. The agreement between APNU and AFC is for the allocation of 6 Ministerial positions. Dominic qualifies for that position.
The PPP is a party without principle. Our new President has not even settled in his seat at the Ministry of the Presidency, and the members have started to fire missiles all over the place. When will the PPP learn anything of substance and act as if it is a responsible party. Maybe, it should not be difficult for its leaders to take a page out of President Hoyte’s book when he graciously conceded to President Jagan after GECOM declared their results. But, this is the PPP, it has no decency.
I would like to give notice to the PPP that your so-called support base that you have taken for granted for so long will disappear in the next five years. President Granger and Prime Minister Nagamootoo will lead our country without fear or favour, and all Guyanese will be raised up together.
In a previous letter to the newspaper, I reminded my countrymen that we are neither Indian nor African – we are Guyanese with a rich Indian, African and Amerindian culture. We will preserve our culture and enhance it as Guyanese.
In the next elections of 2020, President Granger will continue to be President with an overwhelming outpouring of support from all Guyanese. He and our Prime Minister will lay the foundation for a unified Guyana where all will be welcome, regardless of our ethnicity, religion, or party affiliation. These two gentlemen will go down in history as the great unifiers of the Guyanese people.
I call on my countrymen to give our unwavering support to our President, Prime Minister and their team in transforming Guyana for all Guyanese.
Charles Sugrim
