A small mishap quickly escalated into a thrilling movie scene on Thursday afternoon. Four persons are now injured; two are listed as critical as a result of an assault and accident. Injured are Sharon Harry, 33, Gavin Harry, 16, Vickram Ramrattan, 24, and Puran Sugrim.
They were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where Ramrattan and Sugrim have been listed as critical while Sharon and Gavin (mother and son) sustained injuries to their heads, hands, and backs. They were treated and sent home.
Kaieteur News understands that the four had gone on an errand at a shop in David Street, Unity, when Vickram Ramrattan, the driver of the car in which they were traveling, reversed and collided with a moving truck. The truck was being driven by the shopkeeper’s son-in-law.
The truck driver and his wife started an assault on Ramrattan. Puran Sugrim, brother of the assaulted man, also got a beating after he tried to end the struggle between his brother and his enraged attackers.
After realizing the rage of their attackers and also seeing the shopkeeper approaching with a gun, the brothers quickly hopped into their car and sped off in a bid to escape.
With the attackers were in hot pursuit, Ramrattan in a panic “stepped on the gas” accelerating the car but lost control in the vicinity of the Gibson Primary School, on Unity Old Road, according to Sharon Harry. Harry was visibly shaken up by the ordeal.
In recounting what transpired, the traumatized woman said that after the car toppled, the attackers caught up with them and continued to vent their rage.
“Even though Puran was badly injured and was sitting on the ground the truck driver still continued to beat him. He was kicking him in his back and I had to pull him off,” said Harry.
Ramrattan’s wife, Yasmin Heranandan, said that her husband had left to take his brother to a shop, but never returned home. Heranandan was ‘in tears as her husband was being wheeled into the Accident and Emergency Unit of the GPHC.
Ramrattan’s parents, Sushilia and Sarwan Ramrattan, were in shock. They could not believe that such a small issue could have escalated to heights.
Mr. Ramrattan lamented, “For a number plate you have to beat people up like that? And watch the accident that they caused over a small number plate.” He added “A number plate could be replaced but not the life of a man.”
It is unclear whether an arrest has been made.
