Thunder were crowned champions when the curtains came down on the Faye Joseph Mother’s Day Dominoes tournament on Wednesday night last at her residence, Gaulding Place, South Ruimveldt.
Thunder who drew the bye to the final amassed 72 games to beat Saddam on 69 and Spartons 64 in the final. Faye Joseph made the maximum 18 games while Quincy Adams and Kevin Boston made 15 each for the winners.
Jillian Hyman scored 17 and Paul Sodhan 15 for the runner team while Leroy Edwards got the utmost, 18 and Sharon McKenzie 16 for Spartons. Turning Point conceded defeat in the fifth sitting in the semi finals on 36 games leaving Saddam on 65 and Spartons with 60.
Hyman made 17 and Navin Singh 13 for Saddam; Akini Solomon and John Chance got 14 and 12 respectively for Spartons. The three finalists received trophies and cash prizes. Cleva France of All Season received G$20,000 and US$40; Shellon Nicholson of Turning Point pocketed US$40 along with a gift while Jane Chase of Blue Bird and Ulika Haywood of Turning Point
were given special prizes; all for being mother’s who are involved in the sport.
Additionally, female executive members of the Georgetown Dominoes Association (GDA), Sonia Goodluck, Barbara Marshall and Deon Telford received token from Ms. Joseph.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, President of the GDA, Joseph congratulated the teams and players for a high level of discipline. She urged the various associations to work together for the development of the sport adding that she will continue to sponsor tournaments.
Joseph said that teams must play on a regular basis since Guyana will not only be looking to defend the male three- hand title, but capture the female crown at the World championships next year.
She took the opportunity to congratulate President of Guyana David Granger and the new Government stating that the GDA looks forward to working with them for the development of the sport.
The GDA head thanked her Organising Secretary Mark ‘Jumbie’ Wiltshire, PRO Basil Bradshaw and Raymond Alli of All Season for their assistance. She also congratulated Thunder and Thunderblaze teams on their performances in a recent tournament in Barbados.
Thunder captured two first places and a runner up prize competing with teams from the host nation, USA and Canada. Joseph indicated that Thunder will be returning to Barbados in July and journey to Puerto Rico in September for competitions.
