Dear President Granger,
Leading up to the elections, your coalition made much ado about stomping out corruption and corruptors if elected to government. You made the case that corruption was a cancer that had metastasize across Guyana’s institutions and needed to be surgically removed to restore public confidence. The Guyanese people listened carefully to your argument — and agreed with your assessment — and on May 11th, decided that you and your coalition were best equipped to handle the task.
In your address to the department heads yesterday, you outlined your expectations and goals in this regard, and from all accounts, the speech was well articulated. It however fell short of substantive action and many are now asking if your campaign speech to forcefully deal with corruption was just that – a speech.
As you know, Mr. President, it is a mandatory requirement that all civil servants resign their post prior to mounting the political campaign trail. (We saw this in the case of Elisabeth Harper) However, most of the department heads who elected to become political candidates did not resign and are currently still on the job. In keeping with the pervasive corruption within the government ministries, these individuals willfully set out to perpetrate fraud by breaching policies and laws. Allowing them to remain in office is to reward and condone corruption – therefore – they must be asked to resign. The Guyanese people expect nothing less and we assert that this is not about witch-hunting – but instead about holding people accountable for corruptive practices.
I wish to register my personal disappointment that these individuals were given a pass. It gives the impression that your pre-campaign commitment to forcefully tackle corruption and corrupted people was just rhetoric. We, the Guyanese people, are not impressed with your handling of this issue. We are watching to see that you correct yourself by dealing with these civil servants, the likes of Alexie Ramotar, who donned political robes to hit the campaign trail as candidates.
