A Corentyne man is now recovering from a gruesome attack that was allegedly launched against him by a fellow villager, over the alleged theft of cattle in the village of Liverpool.
Mark Simon, 29, was chopped and shot about his body after he was reportedly involved in an argument with another man last Tuesday, over missing sheep.
He is now recuperating in the male surgical ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
The injured man explained from his hospital bed that on the day in question, the police came looking for him because another villager made an allegation against him over the theft of his livestock. Simon, who was not at home at the time, was informed of the police’s visit by his mother. The woman was informed to take her son to the station the following day (Wednesday).
There are speculations that Simon’s attacker went to the Police Station to make a report. After not getting any satisfaction he reportedly returned and launched the attack.
Simon recalled that the man (name given) confronted him about the issue and he told him he did not steal the animal. He said that upon hearing that the man left in a hurry and returned with a gun and cutlass.
“He lef’ and return with a gun and cutlass and shot me in my left knee and back. Then he chopped me on the right thigh and left foot, just above the ankle,” Simon recounted.
He added that after the man attacked him he fell to the ground and slid into a nearby trench, while his perpetrator made good his escape on a bicycle.
Simon was rescued by a relative, who lifted him out to the public road. He was then placed in a car and they headed to the Whim Police Station to make a report, but before the car could have stopped at the station, they were instructed to take the injured man to the hospital.
He was taken to the Port Mourant Hospital but was later transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital. Subsequently, he was transferred to the GPHC. So far he has undergone surgery to have the bullets removed.
Simon related that sometime in October last, his attacker had sent a youth to kill him. He said that he had chopped the assailant in self-defence and had spent six months at the New Amsterdam Prison, before the matter was settled.
Meanwhile, the suspect is still on the run as the police continue their investigation.
