This year’s homicide rate continues to be ahead of last year’s figures, with police revealing that there have been 60 reported murders between January and May 18.
The figure is a seven percent increase for the same period in 2014, when there were 56 reported murders.
According to the Police Public Relations Department, which looked at the period between January and May 18, there was a six percent increase in serious crimes, such as murder, robbery under arms, robbery with violence, robbery with aggravation, larceny from the person, break and enter and larceny, burglary, rape and kidnapping.
A release showed a 15 percent decrease in armed robberies, an 18 percent decrease in armed robberies involving the use of firearms, and an 11 percent decrease in armed robberies in which instruments other than firearms were used.
But police also recorded a 70 percent increase in reported cases of rape, while burglary has decreased by 11 percent.
Investigations are continuing into the murder of Ramesh Puran who was shot and killed during an armed robbery at Belvedere Squatting Area, Berbice, on May 14, 2015.
Two of the three men who were arrested have been released.
Investigations are also continuing into the murder of Sean Anyes of “D” Field, Sophia, who was shot and killed during an armed robbery at his home on May 1, 2015. One suspect was questioned and later released.
In relation to traffic, there were 41 road fatalities up to yesterday from 32 accidents, compared to 43 road fatalities from 40 accidents during the similar period in 2014.
Due to the prevailing rains, the Guyana Police Force is urging motorists and other road users to exercise greater care and attention as they use the roadways.
