… Looks forward to inclusive government
The United States (US) Government has joined in congratulating President David Granger, along with his administration, on being Guyana’s newly elected leader following last week’s General and Regional Elections.
In the statement issued by the US Department of State, the country further congratulated Guyana on successfully holding a “free, fair and credible” electoral process.
“We also look forward to supporting President Granger’s efforts to promote inclusive governance and national development,” said the US government.
The statement also went on to commend the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) on conducting a free, fair and credible electoral process. The US Department urged all parties and their supporters to cooperate in addressing the issues Guyanese people find most important. The statement listed those issues as economic development, citizen security, broader social inclusion and the protection and effective management of the nation’s vast resources.
The US State Department also expressed appreciation to outgoing former President Donald Ramotar and members of his government for their services to the people of Guyana. “President Ramotar is to be congratulated for the numerous achievements that his government made under his leadership,” stated the release.
Last week, GECOM Chairman, Dr. Steve Surujbally declared that A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) coalition managed to gather the majority of the electorate’s votes from the 2015 Elections.
The party came out of the elections with 207,200 of the electorate’s vote in the General category and 205,001 in the Regional. This gave the party 33 seats in Parliament while the remaining 32 seats were allotted to the People’s Progress Party/Civic (PPP/C).
The PPP/C garnered 202,694 votes in the General category of last week’s elections, more than 36,000 when compared to the 2011 elections.
