A D’Urban Street minibus driver was on Tuesday, released on self-bail after he was accused of assaulting
a News Update’s (Channel 65) reporter and news anchor.
Terry Campbell, of Lot 11 D’Urban Street, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on May 16, at Georgetown, he unlawfully assaulted Courdel Jones.
According to reports Campbell and several other persons in a minibus were hurling racial remarks. Jones and an elderly woman who were occupants of the vehicle at the time became startled as the remarks were being hurled.
The elderly woman intervened and the occupants of the minibus, including the driver began arguing with her.
However, Jones rose in defence of the elderly woman; he also made several comments on the issue. After Campbell heard the comments made by Jones, he stopped the bus, exited and dealt Jones several cuffs to his face.
According to Jones, the conductor and other passengers participated in assaulting him. During a bail application, Campbell’s Attorney informed the Magistrate that the matter would be settled outside of the court. But this was quickly refuted by Jones.
Nonetheless, the driver was placed on a bond to keep the peace pending the outcome of the matter.
The case will be called again on June 9, before Magistrate Annette Singh.
