A seven-year-old child, who was suffering from a tumor of the brain, has died. Colleacia Harcourt, called Alicia of Litchfield Village, West Coast Berbice passed at around 6:30 pm, last evening.
Harcourt who developed an intra-ventricular mass about two months ago, was scheduled to travel overseas for a neuro-surgical intervention but her family needed to raise to USD$35,000 or GD$7M for the surgery to be executed in Colombia.
The family was only able to raise, GYD $ 2 million. Several weeks before her diagnosis, Harcourt was described as a lively and talented child, who amused those around her. She was diagnosed after suffering from severe headaches coupled with episodes of vomiting.
Medical Practitioners subsequently recommended A CAT scan and a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the brain, which detected the malignant tumor. Harcourt needed urgent medical attention and intervention which was not available in Guyana.
The JIPA network of Miami, Florida, USA had written the child’s parents to tell them that she can be saved if they can accumulate the funds for surgery in Colombia. However, the organisation stressed the importance of timely intervention; listing the deadline for surgery as May 23rd, 2015.
Amidst the elections buzz last week, the child’s parents made an appeal to members of the public with the hope of raising enough money to get her the necessary treatment.
The parents, Shonetta and Travis Harcourt reported that the former Government had promised to make a $2 million donation since last April but that promise was never fulfilled.
The frustrated couple had hoped that the elections process and the installment of the new President would have been completed in time for Colleacia to get the help she desperately needed.
