A Cuban national was ordered to pay a fine of $30,000 or spend two weeks at the Camp Street jail, after he pleaded guilty to an immigration charge.
Francesco Gonzales admitted to Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, on Monday that between January 6 and May 15, he failed to comply with the conditions of his permit. Gonzales was granted a permit to stay in Guyana from December 5, 2014 to January 6, 2015 but he overstayed his time.
He explained through an interpreter that he was employed by a woman in Georgetown, to work on a pig farm and the woman never paid him. Gonsalves told the court that he extended his stay in the country, hoping that he would be remunerated for his work. He promised that once the woman pays him, he will go back home.
Gonzales also told the court that he has no pending or previous matters in Guyana or in his homeland.
He further alleged that before being taken into custody he had lodged $30,000 with immigration officers but only $25,000 was returned to him. He therefore explained that he did not have all the money to post bail.
Upon hearing the allegation the magistrate ordered Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves to launch an investigation into the matter.
