On Monday a welder made a court appearance after it was alleged that he had forged US currency in his possession.
Simeon Christopher, 34, of Lot 39 Houston Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on May 15, he had one US$100 note in his possession knowing that it was forged.
He was released on $10,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and will return to court on May 25.
His attorney, Dexter Todd in a successful bail application argued that the defendant had no intention of using the money to conduct illegal activities. He contended that Christopher has an unblemished criminal record. The lawyer explained that his client would usually buy US currency from cambios around Georgetown to use whenever he leaves Guyana, while adding that the defendant works on a ship that was heading to Grenada at the time of the discovery. The ship would usually frequent Caribbean islands to deliver sand, stone and other materials.
Todd explained too that at the time of the discovery his client had over US$4,000 in his possession and the US$100 note was found between the other notes.
Todd pointed out that his client has been co-operating with the police investigation and has informed them of how he came in possession of the fake US note.
Police Prosecutor, Shawn Gonsalves had no objections to bail but requested that special conditions be applied.
The defendant was ordered to report to the Narcotics Branch at Police Head Quarters Eve Leary, every Friday.
This matter was transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Courts.
