May 19, 2015 Letters
Dear Editor,
We the people of this great land spoke in unison on May 11, 2015 and had declared that the time had come to free our country from the corrupt, greedy and misguided politicians that have plagued our country for far too long.
The past regime had taken the people for granted, they failed to listen, failed to heed, failed to honour the legacy of one of the greatest patriots and father of the country, Cheddi B. Jagan.
They allowed the party to be hijacked by people that were morally and intellectually shallow and had no place being there. When history revisits, the period of Bharrat Jagdeo will be remembered as one of the worst displays of leadership in the region in recent memory.
The recent crop of PPP leaders had robbed Guyana of its rightful place in the Caribbean community for far too long, to the point where our neighbours were flabbergasted at the state of our country with so much resources and potential.
Enormous damage was caused to the country’s resources and infrastructure. Some foreign entities were allowed to squander and steal our wealth and inheritance, while thousands of overseas Guyanese were neglected and would have gladly returned home and invested the right way if the conditions were suitable, all the while helping to develop the strong middle class and small business community typically seen in prospering countries.
We the people, the bold new crop of young, brave and enterprising Guyanese say no more. No more shall we sit idly by and look at the rest of the world pass us by and our neighbours mock us.
For many who have been hurt, who sacrificed and who have paid the ultimate price; to the many who never lived long enough to see a Guyana vibrant and strong, I say to you that we will ensure that the new leaders are held accountable and do as they promised to you and your children, that your spirit can rest knowing that Guyana has turned a new and important chapter.
Let us free ourselves from hate, bigotry and animosity. There is still much healing to be done and bridges to build as we see a country still largely split along racial lines as evident by the voting trends seen in the recent elections, but what we have also seen was Guyanese of all races uniting across the spectrum to narrow that gap more than ever before.
Let us now all support our new government and ensure that they do as promised and bring us to our rightful place.
God bless us all, particularly the new administration of this beautiful land.
