DEAR EDITOR,
Permit me to congratulate my fellow Guyanese brothers and sisters on this propitious occasion – the swearing-in of the 8th Executive President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, His Excellency Mr. David Arthur Granger.
You have the good fortune of participating in a democratic process to elect your leaders who will serve you for the next five years. For many nations around the world this is still an elusive dream. It is moments like these that make me want to shout out, Desmond!
After what was sometimes a very bitter campaign, we all need to bury the hatchet and embrace our fellow Guyanese brothers and sisters, regardless of race, colour, creed or political persuasion. We should never allow any ill will or old grudges to blind us from what great virtue there is in unity.
There is a huge gap between where we are and where we want to be as a nation. This gap can only be bridged if we all work together as one united people. The skills and talent we need to build Guyana reside in all Guyanese. Like I said before, there is no “us” and “them”. We are all one people with a common destiny.
A loyal opposition is a very essential and important part of the fabric of any democracy. We should therefore respect those who oppose us, instead of seeing them as our enemies. The nation can only prosper and become stronger with healthy competition and challenges in the political arena. That said, I invite every Guyanese to join in the process of nation-building.
I take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude to everyone who made this day possible. Your hard work, sleepless nights, and sacrifice have paid off. Guyana is in a better place because of you, so take a bow. This is a victory for ALL Guyana.
I also wish to thank those decent-minded officials in the outgoing administration for their service and sacrifice.
Good luck and God bless.
Artie Ricknauth
