– over two weeks since complaint filed
“We are still investigating,” is all Crime Chief Leslie James seems prepared to say about the state of an investigation into the threats that former Health Minister Dr. Bheri Ramsaran made against activist Sherlina Nageer almost a month ago.
It has been over two weeks since Nageer gave the Crime Chief a statement and a recording of the infamous April 20 “slap and strip” confrontation between Dr. Ramsaram and Nageer at Whim. Asked yesterday if the police have questioned Dr. Ramsaran, the Crime Chief would only say that “we are investigating.”
In a brief telephone interview, the activist said that she would try to meet again with the Crime Chief next week.
It was on April 20, that Dr. Ramsaran was recorded outside the Whim Magistrate’s Court telling Nageer to “F off”, and referring to her as a “little piece of s**t.” He was also recorded saying that he would have her “slapped for the fun of it,” and saying he could “have some of my women strip her.”
This occurred after Nageer queried the Health Minister’s presence outside the Whim Magistrate’s Court with other PPP supporters in support of former President Bharrat Jagdeo.
Even after issuing an apology, Dr. Ramsaran was later recorded labeling Nageer a “miscreant,” and saying that she was in need of “psychiatric help.”
He was roundly condemned for his statements and the outburst eventually led to President Donald Ramotar eventually relieving Dr. Ramsaran of his Ministerial duties. He was replaced by Dr. Jennifer Westford, the country’s current Minister of Public Service.
But Nageer had made it clear that she was not appeased by the action taken against Ramsaran.
The human rights activist conducted picketing exercises outside various public offices including the Ministry of Health, and the chambers of the Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall.
She received a hostile reception at Lusignan when she went to a large PPP/C rally with a sign stating that “all miscreants in power must go.”
Nageer maintained that there are too many other ministers and public officers who indulge in the abuse of power and menacing behaviour that are yet to be sanctioned by the administration.
She pointed specifically to Attorney General (AG) Anil Nandlall, who had issued threats to Kaieteur News, while soliciting a female journalist for his uncle.
