As Guyana anxiously awaits an official declaration from the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) of the elections results, preliminary results have shown that Regions Four and 10 were largely responsible in securing the coalition’s slim win in the 2015 General and Regional elections.
On Thursday afternoon, GECOM released preliminary results which showed that the APNU+AFC coalition had obtained a narrow lead in the race against the incumbent PPP/C. The results showed that APNU+AFC had earned 206,817 votes while PPP/C had 201,457. This represented a lead of 5,360 votes for the coalition.
Of the 10 districts, the coalition secured victory in only four of them. These were regions Four, Seven, Eight and 10.
The results showed that the regions which played the biggest impact for the coalition, were Four and 10 while the coalition secured small wins in Regions Seven and Eight. In Region Four, the preliminary results indicated the coalition had obtained 113,534 votes while PPP/C gained 69,914. This represented a 43,620 lead for APNU+AFC.
From the 2011 General Elections, Region Four saw the biggest increase in total valid votes cast; in 2011, the total number of valid votes cast had been 156,515 while this year the District recorded 183,949 valid votes, an increase of 27,434.
Furthermore, in 2011, APNU won Region Four with 84,828 votes while PPP/C came in second with 60,851. AFC earned itself 10,635 votes. Also, the opposition parties of APNU and AFC had a combined total of 95,463 votes.
This year, the APNU+AFC coalition earned approximately 66% (18,071 of 27,434) of the increase in valid votes while the PPP/C earned 33% (9,063 of 27,434). The new smaller parties of IP, NIP and the URP earned 1.64% (451 of 27,434) of the increase in votes. The United Force (TUF) saw a decrease from 2011 when it earned 201 votes in Region Four; this year, the party earned 50.
Region 10
Meanwhile in Region 10, all 127 polling stations were processed and showed that the coalition had earned 16,791 while PPP/C earned 2,785 votes, representing a difference of 14,006 votes.
Region 10 has long been known as an opposition stronghold and its continued support in this year’s elections tremendously aided in widening the coalition’s lead.
In the 2011 General Elections, APNU earned 11,358 votes while AFC earned 1,324. The PPP/C landed in between the two parties with 2,868 votes. Combined, APNU and AFC earned 12,682 votes of the 15,584 valid votes cast in the region in 2011 – approximately 81% of the votes.
This year, the coalition earned 85% of the 19,742 valid votes cast in Region 10 with 16,791 votes.
Interestingly, Region 10 recorded a significant hike from 2011 in the number of total valid votes cast; this year, Region 10 recorded 4,158 more votes. However, despite the overall hike in votes, the PPP/C managed to receive 83 fewer votes than it did in 2011 with a total of 2,785.
In contrast, the coalition’s valid votes this year are 1,207 votes higher than the total number of votes cast by the entire Region 10 in 2011.
In fact, 98.8% (4109 of 4,158) of the increase in valid votes went to the APNU+AFC coalition. Even the TUF party managed to secure an increase in votes from 2011. While the party had 34 votes from region 10 in 2011, this year it secured 90 votes from the Region, earning itself 1.3% (56 of 4,158) of the increase. The PPP/C represented -1.9% of votes when compared to 2011.
Following the announcement Thursday of the preliminary results, sections of the country exploded in celebration. The celebrations were particularly lively in Georgetown, where a motorcade was held, and Linden where residents turned out in the streets to exclaim their happiness.
