Rajendra Chandrika included
Guyana Captain Leon Johnson will lead a West Indies President’s X1 in a three-day game against the
touring Australians from Wednesday May 27 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua in the only warm up game for Australia before the first Test starts on June 5.
Australia battle West Indies in a two-Test series in Dominica and Jamaica and the 27 year-old Johnson, who led Guyana, this year, to its first Regional First-Class title since 1998 has two half-centuries in four Tests.
The left-hander made his debut against Bangladesh last year in St Lucia in the historic 500th Test played by the West Indies and also played in all three tests against hosts South Africa but was surprisingly not picked to play in the recent home series against England. He is the only Test player in the President’s X1 side.
A Century in this match could be enough for the hard working GCC player and Demerara Skipper to force his way back into the West Indies team for the Australian series.
Twenty-five year-old Opening batsman Rajendra Chandrika, who has already played for the West Indies ‘A’ team, is the other Guyanese named in the 13-man squad.
The elegant right-hander from the Village of Enterprise on the East Coast of Demerara had a consistent Regional First-Class season for Guyana scoring five half-centuries but is still to get his maiden century with his highest score in 31 games being 90.
Barbadian all-rounder Carlos Braithwaite has played four ODIs and has been appointed Johnson’s Vice-Captain while players like Imran Khan, who had the third highest number of wickets behind Veerasammy Permaul
and Devendra Bishoo (they both made their Test return against England) has been rewarded for his performances at the Regional level.
Braithwaite and fellow Bajan Miguel Cummings and the Jamaican pair of Jason Dawes, and Marquino Mindley are the pacers in the squad. Barbadian Keeper Shane Dowrich has also been rewarded for outstanding work at regional level with both bat and gloves.
The full squad reads: Leon Johnson (Captain), Carlos Brathwaite (Vice Captain), Sharmarh Brooks, Rajindra Chandrika, Roston Chase, Miguel Cummins, Jason Dawes, Shane Dowrich, Imran Khan, Marquino Mindley, Jason Mohammed, Tyrone Theophile, Jomel Warrican. (Sean Devers)
