People who wash and hang their clothes in the backyard to dry would usually expect to return and find them there. However, this was not the case for Albouystown resident Andel Harris. He returned and found all his personal belongings gone. There were just the clothes pegs left hanging on the lines.
Luckily, Andel Harris found the perpetrator and summoned the police.
Kevin Christopher, 19, of Lot 39 Houston Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara appeared in court yesterday to answer to a charge of simple larceny.
Christopher pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on May 13, at Albouystown, he stole a large quantity of Harris’ clothing.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Shawn Gonsalves, told the court that Harris and the defendant know each other. He said that on the day in question, Harris took a quantity of clothing to his female friend for her to wash and hang inside her yard to dry.
Later in the day the woman made checks for the clothes and discovered that they were missing. She informed Harris and he became suspicious.
He took a walk up James Street, Albouystown, and saw the defendant well dressed in one of his jerseys. At the time the defendant also had a black bag in his hands. The victim opened the bag and found more of his clothes inside. He then escorted Christopher to the police station.
Christopher, who told the court that he was homeless, explained that he was walking in Albouystown when he was greeted by a group of strong men. He said that the men asked him if he was new to the village and he replied in the affirmative.
The defendant claimed that the men beat him up and slit his throat with a razor blade. He stated, too that “an Indian guy” who knew him, asked the men to stop.
Further, he added “I get put out and I ask them boys weh they living and I went to the yard. I pick up the clothes and kept some for myself to wear”.
The Prosecutor informed the court that two dark three quarter pants and a jersey were recovered from the defendant. Those were the clothes he was wearing when he was apprehended by the police.
A probation report was ordered by the Magistrate before the defendant is sentenced.
This matter will be called again on June 5.
