DEAR EDITOR,
I write to express my congratulations to the APNU-AFC alliance for their victory at the polls and to offer my best wishes to the President (elect) and Prime Minister (elect), and the soon-to-be-installed new government, as they take on the challenges of implementing their elections promises.
I am not surprised at the results of the elections. The PPP’s loss is due to arrogance, wrongdoing and blunders. Its leaders should accept defeat now and start rebuilding the party. The current PPP is no longer the party of Cheddi Jagan and for which sugar workers and others gave their lives. For the sake of their supporters and the well being of the country, they should concede defeat and not subject the populace to any unnecessary stress at this time.
While there may be jubilation at the APNU-AFC victory, in my view, the fundamental problem of racial voting has not been solved, and it will be up to the new government to take action for change. The policies and programmes of the new government, and the actions of its leaders and officials will either improve or worsen the situation.
President-elect Granger and Prime Minister-elect Nagamootoo have a golden opportunity, one which had been offered previously to Messrs Ramotar and Hinds – but sadly mishandled – to mould Guyana into truly a nation of one people with one destiny. Time will tell if they succeed.
