Aquatic Centre used as Polling Station
National athletes continue to be treated with disdain by the powers that be at the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport, custodians of National sports facilities.
Preparation of Guyana’s swimmers to two international events has been affected with the closure of the National Aquatic Centre at Liliendaal on the East Coast of Demerara and Colgrain Swimming Pool, Camp Street in the City.
A reliable source has told Kaieteur Sport that the multimillion dollar National Aquatic Centre has been closed since May 10 the day before National Elections which took place on May 11 last. This facility was also used as a polling station and has remained closed since.
What is even more alarming is the fact that the water level in the pool is very low which can affect the efficient operations of the pool if it remains so.
Kaieteur Sport has also been reliably informed that as of yesterday, May 13, the Colgrain Pool, located on Camp Street, the other pool that is used by swimmers has been closed until further notice.
Among the swimmers whose training schedules are being disrupted by the closure of these two national facilities are those preparing for the Pan Am Championships set for Toronto, Canada and the World Championships to be held in Kazan, Russia, both in a few weeks.
This development will certainly impact negatively on the athletes being properly prepared.
