If this country is to be saved and made into a modern country, then God has to come down personally and address the Guyanese people. Guyana has some unbelievable humans that God has to directly speak to.
We start with Steve Surujbally. Even though he was educated in communist East Germany from a scholarship during the Cheddi Jagan premiership in the sixties, Surujbally never behaved like a typical communist person. I don’t think he was ever a communist. But Surujbally always showed traits associated with communist culture, just like his friend, Ramon Gaskin who studied in communist Europe too – arrogance.
At every press conference Surujbally hosts, the arrogant deportment is there and it masks the responses to journalists’ questions that are related to areas of competence, not to mention that the GECOM boss is paid handsomely.
One of the trends in his style that I have noticed over the past ten years is the proclivity to say; “I want to do it right so there can be no criticism and challenges.” I have Googled Surujbally and have pulled up several statements to that effect,
But what business is that of his over whether someone will challenge what GECOM does? Surujbally should not perform his tasks at GECOM and be concerned with what others think of him and what court challenges will greet him. I would like to think he has to do what is legal, proper and correct within the confines of the law and not worry what others are likely to say and do.
I think this is basic thinking of humans. Once you are backed by legal and moral laws, then, do what you have to do. A cricket umpire cannot refuse to give a batsman out because the players will protest
One simply has to laugh at Surujbally’s observation that GECOM can no longer continue with its Jurassic system, that it needs to function with high-tech stuff. But who was the boss of GECOM the past fifteen years? Didn’t he know this in 2006 and that he had nine years to move to the high-tech mode? Maybe arrogance prevents the working of novel ideas.
Over to Ramotar. Donald Ramotar has told not only Guyana but the world that he is leading the opposition by over 30,000 votes. With just about ten percent of the statements of poll left to be certified, surely that lead makes you the likely winner. Basic commonsense would apply here – you want the final declaration quickly so you could be sworn in.
Instead Ramotar wants recounts in three regions that will take GECOM’s final announcement way into Friday. That makes no sense at all. Using logical deduction, you want to feel that Ramotar is not in the lead. This would not make sense to any school child anyway in the world.
Next we have the champion himself. He holds a press conference at the most uncivilized hour and lambasted Surujbally and spoke of electoral irregularities including multi-voting. Commonsense goes out the window again just as in the case of Ramotar.
If the PPP is wining, and will win according to both Ramotar and Jagdeo, why then, you want to make charges of ballot tampering and level accusations against GECOM? You won, therefore, the election was smooth and didn’t interfere with your victory. It is not a trend in modern election history that it is the loser who cries not the winner?
Jagdeo got a rude awakening when the international observers clearly and unambiguously told the press that they saw no evidence of Jagdeo’s claim of multiple voting. Can we take it to mean then that by crying the PPP feels it has lost?
Finally, Mr. Jagdeo again and Kwame McKoy. Both are alleging that McKoy was assaulted at Saint Sidwell’s School during an incident there on polling day. But the cameras showed vividly that David Granger and Joe Harmon protected McKoy and he went unhurt into a waiting police car.
There is a large photograph of McKoy on the front page of the so-called beacon of truth, Guyana Times with McKoy on a hospital bed with injuries to his face. Are Jagdeo and McKoy lying? The polling day incident is on video. But stupidity forms part of Mr. Jagdeo’s bag of tricks. Now a member of the international team has openly disputed the PPP’s claim that McKoy was attacked.
This is a serious time in the history of Guyana and I don’t want to be light in my columns. But it is possible that after he left the school, McKoy tripped and fell on the hospital floor while they were painting his face?
