The selectors mandated with picking the Demerara players to participate in the Guyana
Cricket Board (GCB) Four-Day Senior Inter-County cricket competition yesterday called off the second and final day of the second and final cricket Trial at DCC ground due to anticipated inclement weather.
After the first three-day trial at Wales was condemned to a ‘match simulation’ session due to unavailability of 10 players, some of whom were in Trinidad playing semi-professional cricket, and called off after the opening day, a second match was fixed for DCC on Tuesday and yesterday.
The Malteenoes pair of Shemroy Barrington, who scored an undefeated 103 before he was called in by the selectors and leg-spinner Steven Sankar, who captured 4-47 out of the seven wickets for the 212 runs made by Vishaul Singh’s X1 on day one, were the standouts. Opener Robin Bacchus was the only other batsman to past 25 with a responsible 54 in an opening stand of 162 with Barrington.
The GCB Inter-County tournament is set to commence on Saturday with two first round games. And although the results of the General and Regional Elections are not likely to be known before today this should not affect the tournament since up to yesterday afternoon the GCB had not officially postponed the competition.
The team to represent Demerara should have been selected yesterday afternoon.
Berbice play the Guyana Under-19 team at Enmore ground and Demerara face-off with Essequibo at Wales on Saturday.
The second round commences on May 21 with Demerara and Berbice battling at GCC Bourda and Essequibo clashing with Guyana Under-19 at Enmore, while in the third and final round, which is scheduled to start on May 26, Berbice take on Essequibo at Wales and Demerara oppose the U-19s at Everest.
