Although one man has already been placed before the court, police are still actively carrying out further investigations into what they believe is a massive local arms smuggling ring.
The investigation stems from the discovery of a quantity of firearms in a crate at a city wharf last Friday.
A police source, who is closely linked to the investigation, told this newspaper that there is clear evidence that the weapons were imported for strictly criminal activities and not with any political agenda.
The source said that investigators are being assisted by the customs and trade administration of the Guyana revenue authority in checking previous invoices, to ascertain if and when any previous shipments had entered the country.
“investigators are going as far back as possible,” the source stated.
On Friday last Customs officials unearthed a massive arms cache of high-powered rifles, pistols and ammunition at the Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC).
Police and Customs sources said that two Ak-47 assault rifles, some 13.9mm pistols and several rounds of ammunition were found during a routine examination of a crate that had been shipped from Miami.
The shipping agent was identified as Trans Caribbean Cargo International (TCCI), while the weapons were reportedly acquired from Springfield Armory, USA.
According to reports, a female Customs Officer decided to check the crate after observing that it was somewhat larger than other shipment crates. After removing some food items, the official saw two AK-47 rifles in a military-style haversack. On checking further, ranks found thirteen 9mm pistols in the same crate as well as matching ammunition for the weaponry.
There are reports that Guyana Police Force’s top brass have already notified their US counterparts, with a view to locating the shipper.
Local Police are trying to locate Mark Crumwell called ‘Demon’ in connection with the discovery.
A release said that Crumwell, 33, of Lot 40 Vigilance, E.C.D & Lot 10 Buxton, East Coast Demerara, is wanted in connection with possession of firearms and ammunition that is under investigation.
Anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of Mark Crumwell called ‘Demon’ is asked to contact the police on telephone numbers 225-6411, 229-2557, 225-8196, 911 or the nearest police station. All information will be treated with strict confidence.
