… move likely to delay election result
The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) has requested a recount of a number of boxes in all ten administrative regions, citing as its reasons cases where polling agents were allegedly intimidated and forced to flee from their respective locations.
This was announced at a press conference at Freedom House at noon today.
However when asked whether any police reports were filed by the party regarding the incidents, Minister of Education Priya Manickchand stated that this was not done because “the party was busy’.
Attorney General Anil Nandlall, who was present, also spoke of the party filing an injunction in the High Court, a move that would delay the official announcement of an election winner.
When reminded of this fact, Nandlall maintained that whether the elections were delayed or not, a recount was still necessary.
Manickchand also declared her view that the elections were not conducted in a free and fair manner, in contrast to what observers had reported.
However, when reminded of her comments, she later denied ever saying such.
The PPP/C also persisted in their statements that they were leading the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) in the polls.
