It was part mega concert, part political rally when the APNU+AFC Coalition held its final rally before the country heads to the polls today.
After travelling across all ten administrative regions of Guyana, the APNU+AFC campaign trail concluded at the Square of the Revolution on Saturday with thousands of supporters turning out in their green and yellow.
With almost all issues covered now that the campaign trail has wound down, the coalition focused more on the celebration of its “pre-victory” and had the crowd pumped up by a number of performances long before the first speaker took the stage.
Even before the rally’s scheduled 17.00 hrs start, supporters were waiting and ready to spend the next few hours celebrating. The theme was apparently, “go big or go home”: the coalition erected two stages, one for entertainment and one for the speeches while a mini blimp attached to a nearby tree hovered above the sea of the coalition’s colours.
It seemed to be a competition on who could be most creative with the coalition’s paraphernalia; some persons covered their cars completely with the flag, banners and posters while vendors were completely adorned with pins.
The women in particular seemed to have had a good time: there were dresses, tops, pants and even decorated baby strollers.
It was also a mishmash of races and persons from the different regions. During a game of “represent yourself”, persons cheered loudly when their areas were called out.
A performance by the Yoruba Singers was also well received by the audience. From folk songs to soca, the group managed to keep the crowd energised for at least an hour before the main event began.
“Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” the female singer crooned and the crowd roared the lyrics back.
Later in the evening, performances by Guyana’s rising star Lisa Punch also threw the crowd into a frenzy. After a rousing rendition of the National Anthem, Punch came out swinging once more with another song. This time she spent time interacting with the audience; persons eagerly stretched their hands towards the stage to touch Punch, who grazed her fingerprints with the crowd as she belted out her notes.
There was also a cultural fusion in the form of drumming; African drums and tassa drums expertly blended during a joint performance from two groups. As the crowd danced and jumped, the opposing drummers faced off, sweat dripping off of their faces as they tried to outperform the other.
Even when the rally winded down, the energy was at an all-time high. However, it was not just those on the tarmac that were having a good time. All the way to Regent Street in the north and Hadfield Street in the south were filled with supporters. While they might not have been a part of the main action, they seemingly were have a good time regardless. Persons were seen posing with each other for photos, the APNU+AFC flag held up proudly in front of them.
