In what appears to be a bitter dispute between two mining companies, gunmen dressed as security guards invaded a Konawruk mining camp and opened fire indiscrimately, wounding one of the employees.
The incident, which occurred yesterday at approximately noon yesterday, is said to have been orchestrated by security guards attached to another mining company, because of a piece of land that the Figueira Mining company has been prospecting.
Alisha Figuiera, who says she owns the mining operation along with her husband Mario Figueira, said employees from the other prospecting firm made several encroachments on her claim, District H45, Konawaruk. She said she was forced to file an injunction against them.
According to Figuiera, the injunction filed against the rival mining company barred that firm from making any attempt to stop her mining company from working on the disputed land until May 18th, the date set for the hearing.
According to reports, yesterday, four men, who were reportedly dressed in the security uniforms and were armed with shotguns, entered the Figueira camp and started to threaten its occupants. One of the men, who appeared to be in charge, then started giving instructions to his comrades to shoot up the entire camp. It is then that Mario Figueira emerged with the injunction in an effort to dissuade the gunmen from their actions, but to no avail.
According to the victim, he subsequently went to a second camp in order to collect his personal belongings. As he was passing next to some oil drums, he said, the guard gave orders for his comrades to shoot the barrels.
Stating that he is not sure whether he was hit in the crossfire or if someone deliberately aimed at him, he was nevertheless shot to the back of the head.
It was then that the guards are alleged to have bundled him into a 4×4 and drove away. He was subsequently released by his captors, and his colleagues had him air-dashed to the city at around 17:00h. He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for treatment.
Meanwhile, police confirmed that the matter was reported and that a team has been dispatched into the area to complete further investigations.
