In what appeared to be an attempted robbery, a mother and son were shot and injured by bandits who invaded their lot 1604 Cadet Lane, South Ruimveldt home, some time after 2:00am yesterday morning.
Injured are Manya Valenzuela, and her 19 year -old son, Donovan Valenzuela. The two are now patients at a city hospital.
Donovan said that he awoke some time between 2:00am and 3:00am on Saturday, to get a drink of water. He ventured to the front of the house when he saw shadows. He immediately rushed to his mother’s room informing her that their home was about to be invaded.
Being the man of the house, the young Valenzuela was determined to defend his territory; he grabbed his cricket bat and awaited the perpetrators to enter by force through the back door. The lone gunman upon entering the door was greeted by a lash to his chest. This caused the other attackers to spring into action. The injured teen said that he played Russian roulette with the attackers.
At this point, one of the attackers whipped out what was described to be a hand gun, and fired his first shot at the young man, but it missed. Valenzuela was quite determined to defend his ‘turf’.
Realizing that it was a matter of life and death, he said that he lashed the gunman’s hand, but the blow seemed to have had no effect on him as he held unto the firearm, further firing shots, hitting him in his right ankle with the second shot.
According to Valenzuela a third shot was fired before the intruder stormed out of the house, without taking anything.
It is unclear how his mother, Manya Valenzuela received the three shots. Donovan had counted only three shots. She was shot once to the chin, another to the throat and one to the left shoulder. She has undergone surgery to remove all three bullets and is now under close observation.
Kaieteur News was told that neighbours had seen three men fitting the description which Donovan had given, in front of the victims’ home. He described the three young men as people who appeared to be in their early twenties.
Valenzuela said that this is the first time something of this nature has occurred and he does not know what the motive of the invasion might have been.
He opined that robbery could have been a motive and injuries might not have been a part of the intruders’ plan, thus causing them to abort their mission after injuring him and his mother.
The teen’s sister, who upon hearing a window shattering slipped out of her room, but apparently she went unnoticed as she was not hurt in the attack.
