Boxers heighten training in anticipation of Pan American trials

workers are hustling to transform the venue as they engage in a clean-up exercise in preparation of a wake for the late world champion. Conversely, they will be greeted by the rhythmic sound of punching as several boxers pound away on the heaving punching bag.
These boxers comprise a group that was recently called to national duty to attend the Pan American boxing championships scheduled for Tijuana Mexico June 4-9 and include Dennis Thomas (middleweight) of Police, Delon Charles of Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) and Jason Phillips (Bantamweight) of Yougn Achievers, Diwani Lampkin (FYF) and America based super/heavyweight, Quincy Small.
President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Steve Ninvalle disclosed that the above listed pugilists were recommended by the various boxing coaches and sent to the executive of the GBA for ratification.
Cuban coach, Francisco Hernandez Roldon will travel with the team as the coach with able assistance from Sebert Blake who will also double as the team manager.
Meanwhile, local boxers have also been invited to the AMBC Junior tournament in Costa Rica in July and will also field a referee/judge at that tournament. GBA executives admit that the cost of fielding a competent team to these

championships is indeed prohibitive and will require the input of all stakeholders to make the trips a reality.
Ninvalle said that the squad represents the best that’s locally available and it would be a pity if they are unable to field a full strength team. He is appealing to the corporate community for much needed support to take a strong team to the championship thus augmenting Guyana’s chances of qualification.
The team will be encamped from next week and would be under the tutelage of several coaches including Terrence Poole, Roldon, Blake and Wencell Thomas.
