A 26-year-old vendor was yesterday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on a drug trafficking charge.
Roger Hill, of 103 Carmichael Street, Georgetown, is accused of having 426 grammes of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking. Hill pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Police Corporal Sean Gonsalves told the court that on the day in question, the police, acting on information, went to a stall on Merriman’s Mall that is operated by the defendant, and conducted a search. He said that at the time of the search the defendant was the only person present.
Gonsalves added that the illicit drug was found in a black plastic bag and a calabash on a shelf inside the said stall.
He said the defendant was then told of the offence and under caution, he told the police “I trying a thing to make an extra dollar”. He was arrested and charged.
Hill’s attorney, Ronald Daniels, asked for him to be released on reasonable bail because he is the sole breadwinner for his family. Further, the lawyer pointed out that his client has an unblemished record, while adding that the accused has no intention of fleeing.
However, the prosecutor objected to bail because no special reasons were advanced by counsel to satisfy the court.
The matter will be called again on May 25.
