Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Linden U-18 schools football …
Digicel’s three time National School’s football title holders Christianburg Wismar Secondary ‘Multi’ School led by their prolific goal scoring forward Shane Lucky notched their third straight Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Under-18
football championship, winning the coveted trophy, as they edged Wisburg Secondary 1-0, compliments of Lucky, who was later named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
Lucky was spot on after collecting a slip pass from midfield general Duquan Hercules, his captain, and nailed home a ripper from just inside the circle on top the 18 yards box to score in the 7th minute.
Watched by a number of past veteran players from Linden, who are now based in the United States where the Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Foundation is, inclusive of its president Ernest Joseph and Compton ‘Cha Cha’ London and ‘Darty’ Francis and Canada-based James ‘Gads’ Dennis; Wismar Christianburg School did not disappoint but were pushed to the limit, by a stubborn Wisburg Secondary School.
Wisburg’s effort to score with just about thirty minutes into play in the first segment went a-begging after forward William Benn was not able to convert a chance which was thwarted by the advancing ’Multi’ goalkeeper Fitzgerald Cobena.
Five minutes later, Cobena came off his line and was lucky to get there but the ball ran free only to see a Wisburg player reaching too late as his shot missed by a foot going past the right upright.
As the end came Wisburg could not make use of another scoring opportunity.
Neither side would be able to find the back of the net in the second half of play but enterprising play from Wisburg was met with sturdy defending from the champions.
All along the Wisburg lineup saw goalkeeper Jonathan Copeland busy at times as the defence was marshaled by Orlando Adams, Elvin Williams, Steve Gonsalves and James Reynolds, with Kelvin Neblett and Alvin Chapman at midfield, while Deon Williams and William Benn were up front.
On the other hand, Christianburg Wismar Secondary playing with confidence and shrewdness were held together by their captain Hercules, Jonathan Simon in the middle, Shane Lucky and Kelvin Primo their forwards and the tackling backline of Pedro Hamilton, Amaniki Buntin, Keshawn Dey and Seon Barret.
Lucky was the Top Goal Scorer prize with five in the tournament and also the Best Forward award, with teammate Hercules being the Best Midfielder, while Wisburg’s Orlando Adams was the Best Defender and goalkeeper Jonathan Copeland named the Best Goalkeeper.
