A 34-year-old East Canje man, who allegedly threw methylated spirits on his 11-year-old son and set him ablaze, has been remanded to jail on a charge of attempted murder.
The man, Ravendra Samaroo, of 133 Gangaram, Berbice, a field foreman attached to the Rose Hall Estate, appeared yesterday in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court. He is alleged to have committed the act on his son, Ricky Samaroo, who resides at the same address and is a student of the Port Mourant Primary School. The incident allegedly occurred on Thursday May 7, 2015.
According to information, the man and his son are the only two residents at the above address. Around 22:50 hrs on the day in question the two were at home, where the elder Samaroo was reportedly drinking. Around the time mentioned above, the man attempted to go out to purchase more alcoholic beverages. However, he was stopped by his son who was afraid to remain at home alone. The man insisted in going and his son held on to his boots.
As a result the man allegedly got hold of some methylated spirits and threw it about his son’s body and lit a match causing the lower part of the boy’s body, face, back and chest to receive burns.
The child was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was admitted for emergency treatment, before being transferred to the Georgetown Hospital where he has been admitted for further treatment.
The father was arrested and charged. He will have to return to court on June 3rd.
