A 63-three-year-old limping woman was hauled before a magistrate on Monday after she was allegedly found with a quantity of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
Patsy Baptist, who resides at Lot 963, 16th Street, Diamond, East Bank Demerara, denied the allegation that on April 30, she had 16 grammes of marijuana in her possession for the purpose of trafficking.
The differently-abled woman pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to her by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The prosecution told the court that on the day in question, around 14:30hrs, ranks from the narcotics branch of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) went to the home of the defendant and conducted a search. The illicit drug was found in a hat in Baptist’s bedroom.
According to the police, under caution, the woman confessed to having “purchased the drug to sell and make a living”. She was arrested and charged for the offence.
However, her attorney, Nigel Hughes, argued that the substance was not found in his client’s possession. The lawyer said that the home is occupied by several persons and the drug could have belonged to any of them.
Hughes contended that there is no way possible that the woman could be involved in selling the drug because she is not physically capable.
Bail was refused for the defendant because her attorney failed to advance special reasons to satisfy the court.
