A Brazilian national was on Monday released on $350,000 bail after he pleaded not guilty to a wounding charge.
Ronaldo Lemar, 22, is accused of wounding Eddy Branche, also known as “Coolie Boy”, on May 1, at Melangi Landing, Cuyuni River, with the intent to commit murder.
The charge was read to Lemar by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The court heard that on May 1, around 03:00hrs, the victim went to the defendant’s shop where several persons were consuming alcohol and dancing at the time. Branche, who was in a drunken state, approached a young woman and asked her for a dance, as a result an argument ensued between him and some Brazilian men.
During the confrontation the defendant approached the victim and pushed him out of the shop. Branche hurled several beer bottles at Lemar and ran out of the shop. Lemar grabbed a spade and reportedly dealt the victim several lashes. He also reportedly stabbed Branche.
The matter was reported and Branche was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital for medical attention.
Subsequently Lemar was apprehended, arrested and charged.
During his bail application, Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat told the court that Branche attacked his client with a knife. He told the court that his client sternly denies the allegation against him.
The prosecution did not oppose bail, but asked that it be granted in a substantial amount. The magistrate was also asked to apply special conditions.
Lemar was ordered to report to the officer in charge of the Aranka Police Station every Friday. The matter has been transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for May 21.
