Imprisoned businessman, Barry Dataram and his reputed wife, made another court appearance yesterday to answer to a charge of unlawful possession of ammunition.
Dataram, also known as ‘Mogotani’ or Kevin Dataram, of 13 Vriesland, West Bank Demerara, and Anjanie Boodnarine, 19, of 79 Patentia, Housing Scheme, West Bank Demerara, denied the allegation that on April 16, at Diamond, East Bank Demerara, they had in their possession one hundred and eighty .223 rounds of ammunition in their possession without being the holders of a firearm licence.
They were once again represented by attorney Glenn Hanoman.
The attorney told the court that he finds it strange that the police are only charging the two defendants, since other persons were involved in their investigations.
Police Prosecutor, Bharrat Mangru, did not provide the court any facts on what transpired on the day in question. However, he indicated that investigations are still ongoing into the matter.
They were remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and the matter will be called again today.
The two defendants along with their two friends, Komal Charran and Trevor Gouveia, appeared in court on April 20, and were remanded on a drug trafficking charge.
The charge stemmed from authorities linking them to a large quantity of cocaine discovered during a bust at a house in Diamond.
Particulars of that charge stated that on April 16, last, at 661 Fourth Avenue, Block X Diamond, East Bank Demerara, they allegedly had 129.23 kilogram of cocaine in their possession for the purpose of trafficking.
On that court appearance Assistant Superintendant of Police, (ASP) Stephen Telford, told the court that ranks from the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) swooped down on the house and conducted a search in the presence of the defendants. During the search they unearthed the illicit drug.
Their attorney stated that the house in which CANU allegedly found the drug is accessible to numerous persons. However, he opined that Barry Dataram continues to be abused and is suffering at the hands of law enforcement officers who are trying to secure a conviction for him. He stressed that they are trying to “sink his client.”
