Police have charged a Campbellville pork knocker for causing the death of popular boxer, Andrew
‘Six Head’ Lewis.
Yesterday, Mannex Powers, 32, of 102 Campbellville Housing Scheme, denied the charge which stated that on May 4, last, at New Hope Public Road, East Bank Demerara, he drove motor car PNN 596, in a dangerous manner causing the death of Lewis.
Powers, a father of four was released on $250,000 bail.
The charge was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
During a bail application, Powers’ Attorney, Peter Hugh, told the court that the accident was unfortunate and that it could have happened to anyone. He said that on the day in question, Lewis, who was riding a pedal cycle alongside his client’s car, suddenly swerved in front of the moving vehicle without looking.
Hugh stated that his client has no pending or previous matter before a court of law and he has no intentions of fleeing the jurisdiction.
Police Corporal, Bharrat Mangru, contended that the deceased did not ride in front of the car.
The defendant was instructed to lodge his passport and report to the Subordinate Officer at the Grove Police Station Traffic Department every fortnight, commencing May 22.
The matter was adjourned until June 8.
According to reports, Lewis, who left his Hutsonville home, Hope, East Bank Demerara, was riding his bicycle to the neighbouring village of Friendship, when he was struck down.
However, police sources said that Lewis was struck from behind as the rear wheel of the vehicle was badly damaged. It appears as though Lewis’ body struck the windscreen of the vehicle as well, since that was also damaged.
A post mortem done yesterday found that the death of the former boxer was due to blunt trauma to the head and a broken neck caused, most likely, by the whiplash sustained when the car struck the bicycle.
