A farmer almost lost a limb following a cutlass attack by drunken neighbours in the Kuru Kururu Third Creek area. Injured is 20-year-old Brian Waddell, who was dealt a single chop to his left arm about 14:00hrs on Tuesday afternoon.
The injured Waddell was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre by his mother and younger sister. When he arrived at the Centre, despite the arm being wrapped in a sheet, blood was seen streaming out, as his mother in a frantic state, was literally lifting the arm which was said to be hanging.
Doctors and nurses were swift in attending to the young man. After administering some bleeding control techniques, he was subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for further treatment.
The man’s younger sister, Revena Waddell, said that she was at home at the time of the incident when she heard her brother “hollering”. She said that the neighbours while in their usually drunken state have on numerous occasions threatened to kill the entire Waddell family and that sometime in the past, the assailant and her brother had an argument which led to Tuesday’s chopping.
Joyce Fitzpatrick, Waddell’s mother, said that she went to a nearby shop to call her husband home as she was not well. She said that her son came to the location asking her to leave his father who was consuming alcohol right there. That was when one of her drunken neighbours then approached her son.
“The boy that chop my son then came up to him and say lef the lady leh she talk to she husband, and my son then responded telling the man to move,” said Fitzpatrick.
It was then that the trouble ensued as another one of the neighbours came out of nowhere and launched an attack on Waddell who then ran off to his farming spot which was not too far from his home. There he met his brother, and with the neighbour in hot pursuit the brother brokered peace between the two.
It was while the two were talking things over that the neighbour who had earlier approached Waddell at the shop dealt him a brutal chop to his left arm, then ran off, laughing and saying “Dead yo so and so; is long meh wan kill you.”
The injured man’s mother has opined that the brothers’ (neighbours) had initially planned the attack on her son. She said after hearing about the threats she would advise the neighbours who only moved into the area some months ago, to keep the peace which they always agreed to do. However, when the alcohol steps in, all hell breaks loose.
She also said that a report was made at the Kuru Kururu police outpost some time back. The police officer had told her to return should the threats continue. She never did return despite the continuous threats.
Following the chopping, a report was made and the suspect arrested and placed in the Timehri police station lockups.
The injured Waddell claimed, “They tell me I must vote fa PPP/C and I told them I am not a PPP man.” He was discharged from GPHC the night of the chopping but had to be rushed back to the hospital because the arm continued to bleed profusely.
