Fifty-one local based players have been called to trails by the Guyana Football
Federation ahead of the CFU Zone Olympic Qualifying competition from June 24 – 28 in Aruba where Guyana has been drawn with the hosts, Cuba and Antigua & Barbuda.
Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz and his Technical support staff were busy yesterday morning putting the players through the paces at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence. Shabazz in a comment stated that there is a lot of talent in the group that they have put together arising out of a number of inter association matches among the associations.
He did note that like with the senior team a few months ago, the fitness levels of the players are below the required.
”But the fact that we’ve included at least seven Under-23s in the senior team in the last four senior team matches, I think it gives us a nice foundation in which to build upon.”
Yesterday’s trail was the second day and Shabazz shared that they are aiming to arrive at a squad of between 24 to 26 players to go into camp from this weekend.
At least six overseas players have made themselves available which would add more depth to the squad among them, the Canada based White brothers and Marcel Barrington who plays in England. Shabazz noted that it looks very promising for Guyana whose future will be secured as a result of what is taking place now.
”Four years from now, three years from now, five years from now these kids are going to make up the senior national team so even the ones who are not in the final 24 to train, we’ve got to be able to keep tabs on them and to arrange clinics to bring them in to keep them in touch with what’s happening at the highest levels of the game.” (Franklin Wilson)
